Decorating an Autumn Living Room

Thanksgiving is tomorrow and my girlfriend Sandi wanted help in elevating her sweet family room to a more ‘autumn welcoming space’ for her family this holiday.
We had so much fun bringing in some of the natural elements that pumpkins, wheat sprays, twig wreaths, fresh persimmons and oranges provide and mixed them with some of her existing pieces as well as interesting textural home decor from places like Target and Homegoods.

One of the things I love most about my girlfriend is that she adds DIY touches to make her existing pieces work. She’s a little like me in that she’ll grab a paintbrush and change a piece rather then running out to buy something new.  You’ll see that Sandi not only painted her oak kitchen table and chairs to a rustic black but also finished the corner piece hutch.  I think they look great. :)

My favorite of Sandi’s DIY projects is the fun artwork placed above her fireplace. She had everyone in the family add their thumbprint in their favorite color to make something fun yet meaningful to fill the large space.

We were very fortunate in that her Family Room color scheme was made for all the Autumn decor that is found this time of year.  By adding a charcoal agate rock and black and gold fabric boxes to the built-ins as well as the fall pieces placed within the wooden tray on her ottoman, her place already feels warmer with texture.

The soft cozy throws rolled in the rustic basket sitting in front of her fireplace and woven throw placed on the ottoman also offer a feeling of home.  Can’t believe some of the pieces we stumbled upon to add to her adorable room…  I knew with her large chocolate sofa and chaise we’d need a few new Seasonal pillows to pull the space together.   We were thrilled to find the modern fresh design on the floral pillows from Homegoods along with the classically striped in just the right tones.  The cherry on top was finding the adorable two toned fabric pumpkin at Target for $10. Couldn’t believe our luck! :)

I love everything we’ve done and once again it just reminds me that anyone can completely change the way a space looks by switching out a few pieces.  When doing so, just keep in mind all the colors that are in the space and try to add pieces with different materials and textures with a uniqueness to them… By doing this you too can achieve a new look with interest for all to appreciate!

ENJOY and Happy Thanksgiving!
