Wow! Hello again everyone, Emma here. Happy September & I hope you all had a wonderful Summer.
It’s been forever since I’ve said hello or updated anything related to our book club. I actually archived the facebook page for a few months because of well, basically.. everything. If I’m being perfectly honest I didn’t pick up a book from May until August… crazy right? I normally read 5-10 books a month and I didn’t read anything – which was extremely overwhelming for me.
I’m really sorry that I didn’t provide an explanation publicly on why I paused the book club. When the beginning of the Pandemic happened I experienced a boatload of anxiety that was new and scary – I was consuming way too much media with coronavirus updates, social justice, the election, etc. and it caused me to back away entirely from this fun thing we had going! Now I am back and feeling so excited to kick off our book club up again. I have to preface this by saying I began reading a ton over the last month and a half before getting the book club back into full swing… I wanted to make sure I was back in the swing of reading before starting the book club up again. I have to say, it feels so good to use my brain again!
So excited to share the newest books for October. As many of you know, we have a book club page on Facebook where we swap book recommendations, chat about the books, and more. Click here to join!
October Books
Anyways.. on to our October Book Club Picks! For those of you who are new or not in the facebook group.. we decided to add a secondary book to January’s lineup several months ago for the overachievers & decided to keep it going! We’ll be discussing the secondary novel solely in the facebook group, not here on the blog. We’ll always have 1 main book set for each month and a secondary book for those who aren’t interested in the main book or for the overachievers who want to read both.
We also wanted to share that we have a ‘bookshop’ online where we’ve listed ALL the books that we’ve read in our book club. You’ll find everything from our favorite reads to what we’re currently reading to Jeff’s favorites.. and more. Linking all HERE. You can order everything from that page & proceeds go back to the authors and independent bookstores. It’s an amazing opportunity to not purchase from Amazon. Click here to shop & see everything we’re reading!
Our main book is…
The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James!
Summary:
AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Something hasn’t been right at the roadside Sun Down Motel for a very long time, and Carly Kirk is about to find out why in this chilling new novel from the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of The Broken Girls.
Upstate New York, 1982. Viv Delaney wants to move to New York City, and to help pay for it she takes a job as the night clerk at the Sun Down Motel in Fell, New York. But something isnʼt right at the motel, something haunting and scary.
Upstate New York, 2017. Carly Kirk has never been able to let go of the story of her aunt Viv, who mysteriously disappeared from the Sun Down before she was born. She decides to move to Fell and visit the motel, where she quickly learns that nothing has changed since 1982. And she soon finds herself ensnared in the same mysteries that claimed her aunt.
I’ve heard AMAZING things about this book and I am beyond excited to give it a read! Really great spooky thriller for October – I knew I wanted to pick something ‘on the edge of your seat’, and hopefully you all are excited.

The Second Book is…
Still Life by Louise Penny!
Summary:
Winner of the New Blood Dagger, Arthur Ellis, Barry, Anthony, and Dilys awards.
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.
Still Life introduces not only an engaging series hero in Inspector Gamache, who commands his forces—and this series—with integrity and quiet courage, but also a winning and talented new writer of traditional mysteries in the person of Louise Penny.
Many people LOVE this series by Louise Penny, and I feel like it’s the perfect spooky thriller for October. This is the first book too, so if you’re new to the Inspector Gamache series, then you’re in luck!

Please keep in mind that I’m reading alongside you each month.. I don’t know anything more than you other than what’s in the main summary. If there are issues that may trigger you while reading a book, please do your due-diligence and research whether this book is right for you. This book club is open to all subjects – hard times, politics, romance, horror, serial killers, miscarriage and so forth. Please make sure to research if topics are of a concern. Thanks!

Kirsty and Emma,
Thank you for sharing these great links. Would it be possible to also share your Spotify playlist each month? You have such great taste which just so happens to match my own and I have thoroughy enjoyed listening to your August playlist while I work remotely each day for John Hopkins School of Education. I love having theses songs while working.
Thanks so much!
Laura
Welcome back, great recap. I have had Still LIfe on my goodreads “want to read” list and actually found it in LARGE PRINT lol at the library this week. So was happy to see that selection. I’m not on facebook (too much social media, you can relate) but will enjoy reading it this month. Added the first book to my list. Happy reading!
Hi, Emma! I’m a big fan of the Kristy Wicks Instagram account & all the content you and your mom produce! I’m a mom with a 21 year old daughter so I find it super relatable! I’m an editor of young adult fiction at Random House—best known as the editor of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, the Fallen series, and most recently, House of Salt and Sorrows. I am also an author—my holiday romcom, ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS, is coming 11/3!
I’m reaching out because I wondered if you would be interested in doing a Q&A or short feature for your book club with an editor, a.k.a. me?😊 Maybe something promoting perfect books to gift for the holidays? 🎄
Thank you! Have a great weekend.
Warmly,
Wendy

Hi Emma!
New to the book club….what is the format? Do I buy one of the above and we all read it first?
Thanks,
Kristin
I’ve already read the first October book! It was great! Looking forward to the next one.
