Best Shows & Movies to Binge on Netflix During Quarantine

Hi from my house everyone! While practicing social distancing to help flatten the curve, many of us will be spending our days and nights looking for ideas on what to do to help pass the time. Of course, one of the most popular things that most have been indulging in and talking about is binge-watching shows & movies on Netflix. Netflix is one of our favorite streaming platforms because of the wide variety of high-quality shows and movies they offer! There doesn’t seem to be a day when someone isn’t asking me what we’re loving.. Having even more time this past couple of weeks to marathon watch everything under the sun, I thought it would be fun to compile a list of all our favorites from Netflix below!

I know how overwhelming it can be when first opening Netflix – there are SO many titles grabbing your attention. Picking one can seem like such a chore sometimes! To make matters worse for us.. because we don’t want to watch a show that doesn’t have great reviews.. we google each and pull up the reviews. Doing this narrows down some of the shows but I don’t want to waste my time watching something bad. I usually tend to agree with the critics and Rotten Tomato crowds. Hopefully our list of shows & movies that we love below will help you with your selection process throughout the quarantine time period.

Netflix TV Series

  • The Spy (2019) This drama tells the astonishing true story of Israel’s most prominent spy, Eli Cohen, who infiltrated the Syrian government in the 1960s. One of our FAVORITE shows in recent years! (Both Emma and Kristy approved).

  • Unbelievable (2019) When a teen reports being raped, then recants her story, two female detectives follow evidence that could reveal the truth; based on a true story. Such a serious topic, however – this show is another favorite of ours. So interesting! (Both Emma and Kristy approved).

  • Love is Blind (2020)Singles try to find a match and fall in love — without ever seeing each other face-to-face, as emotional connection attempts to conquer physical attraction. Not going to lie, this show is slightly cringey, however Emma loves it and the process does actually work for 2 couples. Fun for fans of The Bachelor!

  • The Office (2005-2013)This US adaptation, set at a paper company in Scranton, Pa. It features the staff of Dunder-Mifflin, a staff that includes characters based on characters from the British show (and, quite possibly, people you work with in your office). One of Jeff’s and Emma’s favorite shows of all time (and many people all over the world) – hilarious and truly funny, great way to get your mind off of the outside world.

  • Safe (2018)Widowed surgeon Tom has struggled to raise his two daughters alone following his wife’s death a year ago. Things seem to be on the right track for the family, who live in a gated community, because they have close friends nearby and Tom is in the early stages of a new relationship. But the situation takes a turn for the worse when Jenny, Tom’s oldest daughter, goes missing along with her boyfriend. Tom enlists girlfriend Sophie, a police detective, to help locate the teens, but her new partner is working her own agenda. As the investigation intensifies, Tom unearths dark secrets about the people closest to him in his affluent neighborhood. The drama series was created by mystery novelist Harlan Coben. We all loved this whodunnit. (Both Emma and Kristy approved).

  • Outlander (2014-today)a historical drama T.V. series based on the novel series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon. Claire Randall, a married former WWII nurse who in 1946 finds herself transported back to Scotland in 1743. There she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings. One of our favorite shows as a family. (not for young kids) We all love this show for so many reasons. The history, the filming, the acting, the romance.. need I say more? Currently airing season 5 on Starz, but you can watch the first 3 seasons on Netflix. Binge away! (You can also read the series as well if you can’t get enough). (Both Emma and Kristy approved)

  • Dirty John (2018) Debra Newell has a perfect life — from the outside — she’s successful, beautiful and lives in Newport Beach, one of California’s most desirable coastal cities. The only thing missing from her life is love, so when she meets the charismatic, handsome and charming Dr. John Meehan, she is swept off her feet in a whirlwind romance. Her daughters, Terra and Veronica, set out to prove that he’s just a conman after they are displeased at the fast-tracked relationship and decide to investigate their mother’s new beau for themselves. As Debra gets drawn deeper into his lies, the psychological manipulation has consequences for the entire family. WOW! What a crazy show, and the fact that it’s a true story boggles the mind. Emma told me the story of Dirty John before it aired on TV (she listened to the podcast) and I was amazed. The show was great and we loved the acting. (Both Emma and Kristy approved).

  • The Great British Baking Show (2010-2020)Follow the trials and tribulations of passionate amateur bakers whose goal is to be named the U.K.’s best. Each week, the bakers tackle a different skill, the difficulty of which increases as the competition unfolds. Mary Berry, a leading cookbook writer, and Paul Hollywood, a top artisan baker, serve as judges. Together with hosts and comic foils Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, Berry and Hollywood search for the country’s best amateur baker by testing the competitors’ skills on cakes, breads, pastries and desserts, crowning a winner after 10 weeks of competition. Emma LOVES this show! For a fun piece of relaxing T.V, it’s so bingeable and she absolutely loves watching. Jeff and I are beginning this now.

  • Virgin River (2019)Seeking a fresh start, a nurse practitioner moves from Los Angeles to a remote Northern California town and is surprised by what — and who — she finds. Emma loves this show and many of you recommended that she watch it! I’m planning to watch this with Jeff this weekend!

  • Narcos Mexico (2018-2020)This continuation of “Narcos” explores the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, starting at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose, disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers. It’s the 1980s, and Felix Gallardo takes the helm of the Guadalajara Cartel, unifying traffickers to build an empire. As DEA agent Kiki Camarena moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, he learns his assignment is more challenging than he imagined. A tragic chain of events unfolds as Camarena gains intelligence on Gallardo and becomes more entangled in the mission. We loved this show (especially the first season). Great actors and storyline. Note – there are lots of subtitles but it’s soooo worth it. We like the 1st season the best so far. (Both Emma and Kristy approved).

  • Living With Yourself (2019)A man who is burned out on life and love undergoes a mysterious treatment, only to discover that he has been replaced by a better version of himself. Emma and Zach watched this show and binged it really quickly! Super unique and interesting concept. We also love Paul Rudd. Also on our list.
  • You (2019-2020)What would you do for love? For a brilliant male bookstore manager who crosses paths with an aspiring female writer, this question is put to the test. A charming yet awkward crush becomes something even more sinister when the writer becomes the manager’s obsession. Using social media and the internet, he uses every tool at his disposal to become close to her, even going so far as to remove any obstacle –including people — that stands in his way of getting to her. We all LOVED this show so much! Obsessed with the 1st season. The 2nd picks up after the first few so keep that in mind. Looking forwarsd to the 3rd season. Fast paced and fab! (Both Emma and Kristy approved).

    1. The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez was heartbreaking to watch. I just couldn’t wrap my head around a woman hating her child so much that she would do those things to him or allow someone else. :(

  10. This is fabulous Kristy, thank you so much for the suggestions! My husband and I are always scrolling through and never can find anything! We ask our kids all the time! But this is wonderful…πŸ˜πŸ‘ŒπŸ»β™₯️

  11. I’ve been enjoying some of the foreign series on Netflix. I just finished Valhalla. It’s from Iceland, murder crime type series, really good.
The Forest, it’s another murder mystery from France. Also really good.
For a series, I loved Peaky Blinders, very well done.

  12. Check out Schitt’s Creek if you are looking for something on the lighter side. There are 5 seasons streaming on Netflix. Sometimes we all need a little funny in our lives at times like this especially. Stay safe and healthy!😘

  13. Netflex – The Kominisky Method (series) with Michael Douglas and Alan Akrin is awesome.

Amazon Prime Video – Goliath (series) with Billy Bob Thornton and William Hurt is OUTSTANDING!

  14. I love watching all the food shows! Currently binging Somebody Feed Phil – which is a good show and travel show! He is the creator of Everyone Loves Raymond. And he is funny.
    Others are:
    The Chef Show
Zumbo’s Just Dessert-competition show in Australia
    Ugly Delicious
    Chef’s Table
I also just finished Schitt’s Creek and loved it!

  15. My husband and I are totally enjoying watching Schitt’$ Creek. We’re almost finished with the final season (5) and so sad to have it be over. Great writing that’s both funny and smart, and not to mention amazing actors. Let me know what you think, if you decide to give it a try πŸ€—πŸ‘

    1. Season 6, the finale season, of Schitts Creek can be seen on the network Pop. I just streamed it :)

  16. Kristy, Jeff & Maggie,

Thank you sweetheart for sharing your wonderful list of go to movies. Actually thank you for keeping us afloat with laughter. Stay healthy and safe.

    Deb ( nanaalwaysandforever)

  17. Homeland. The best US series we’ve seen in a long time. It was originally on Showtime and now it’s on Netflix.

    1. Yes! Can’t believe Homeland isn’t on your list, Kristy! It’s our very favorite and keeps us up way too long saying…ok, just one more.
Also, The Trials of Gabriel Hernandez needs to be seen. A very important, although upsetting, story.

  18. Hi Kristy and Jeff

I loved watching β€œThe Fall”. I’m not sure where you’ll find it in the US, I’m in Australia.

Also, a new series just started here on our ABC called β€œThe Capture”. It’s shaping up to be a good one too.

Henry (my ragdoll) and I are enjoying spending a lot of time at home together. We aren’t β€œshut down”, but are asked to stay home as much as possible. Who knows what’s going to happen next. It seems to be changing every day.

    Stay well πŸ’–

  19. Have you watched The Keepers? It’s a true murder documentary that won many awards and rated one of the highest produced anywhere. 97% or 9.1/10. The murder victim was a young beautiful nun and teacher Kathy Cesnik. So many amazing things about this true crime. Her female hs students are the ones investigating her murder close to 40+ years later after it went cold case for the police. It doesn’t focus heavily on religion if that would turn you off but it does on the mystery of her being missing, found, where, how and why. Hence the high rating of the documentary. Exceptionally good and still today unsolved to a point ..

  20. Thanks for these suggestions🌸
    Currently finishing up OFFSPRING…
Started off slow but on advice stuck with it. Didn’t take long till I was hooked…some nights up till 3:00..didn’t want to stop.
Australian….the fashions the two main characters wear are fabπŸ˜‰

  21. Just saw press about Self Made on Netflix with Octavia Spencer which looks really good. Also heard about Inside Bill’s Brain on Netflix, about Bill Gates. Stay safe and healthy everyone!

  22. β€œThe Touristβ€œ On Netflex with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp!
Very good movie! Romantic mystery- Angelina Jolie is very elegant and her clothes are so pretty in the movie!
    Stay safe all! ❀️

  23. Just binge watched β€œTiger King” about a man who owned massive amounts of live tigers & It was crazy! If I hadn’t of known or watched real life footage of this guys personality & all the things he did & stuff that happened to all the people he was dealing with, I wouldn’t of believed it. A Hollywood writer couldn’t have written all the crazy things that happened in this documentary.

    1. i watched that as well… i could not pull myself away from watching it! Truth is definitely stranger than fiction!

  24. LOVE all those shows and movies just 3 shows that I absolutely adore but you don’t have there are Friends, The Vampire Diaries and Riverdale. Thank you and no need to reply.

  25. We have similar tastes… So you will love Grace and Frankie, Schitt’s Creek, and The Stranger (also by Harlan Coben which I enjoyed even more than Safe).

    1. The Night Manager – (might actually be on Prime)

Call My Agent! – Set in Paris. It’s in French with English subtitles, so not a show to watch when you are sleepy. We LOVE this show!!!

      Schitt’s Creek

The Great British Baking Show – I’m sad we’re already on the last season. I’m addicted to this show!!!

Master of None – if you like The Office and Parks and Rec, you’ll find this funny.

  26. Thanks so much Jeff and Kristy for these awesome lists!.. I realise how much time and research went into making these up! Xxx

  27. Money Heist was awesome and full of action! Tiger King is a train wreck of a show but makes you really appreciate the life you have.

  28. Just started Hell on Wheels last night! A friend told us to watch it. Takes place in 1865 just after the Civil War. We watched 4 shows in one night!

  29. Unorthodox is a very good series as well. There are only 4 shows. Hope they have a season 2!

  30. Wasn’t that Wild Wild Country crazy? We used to live out in that area. Jon Bowerman went to our church, (Son of Bill Bowerman of Nike) nice guy, had a belt buckle that said β€œJesus is my saddle partner” he rode & trained horses with his young wife. There’s allot of unusual happenings out there in that part of Oregon. Even had a cowboy shot off his horse, on the Six Shooter Ranch, (I think it was the six shooter) still unsolved to this day, Someone wrote a really good book about It. I’ll see if I can find the name & send it to you, it was an amazing read! It was kind of like the Wild West out there, but the scenery is gorgeous. Thank you for this great list!!!

  31. on my block, all american, riverdale, jane the virgin, lucifer, locke and key, atypical, anne with an e are just a few of my favorites!

  32. Longmire is a great series to watch with the husband. We both really enjoyed it; so much, we now attend Longmire Days in Wyoming.

  33. Thank you for suggesting 7 Seconds. My son is one of the writers on that show. His episode is Episode 9. The fabulous Regina King is in it and it is a wonderful depiction of race in America.

  34. Netflix β€œAlone” phenomenal survival show.

Thank you sweetheart for your list.

    Nanaalwaysandforever

  35. The first season of Sweet Magnolias was really good! It reminds me of a cross between Gilmore Girls and Steel Magnolias. I thought it was really good and I hope they come out with season 2.

  36. You’ve got to watch Bloodline (on Netflix).. One of the stars is Linda Cardellini from Dead to Me! I didn’t see it on your list, SOO Good!! Thanks for posting your list,..OHH
& Hart of Dixie (chick flick but also SOO Good)!! XO B.

  37. Thanks for the ideas😊
Another good show is, β€œImposters”. It’s a drama/comedy about a female imposter, the trail that she leaves behind, and those seeking closure.
A good Movie on Netflix is, The Night Clerk.
It’s about a special needs clerk at a hotel, who is accused of murder.
A great series the we just discovered, but has been around for many years is, Homeland.
Fantastic show!! We were hooked at the first episode.

    1. :) Does anyone REALLY get overwhelmed opening up Netflix:)
Everyday life is overwhelming, especially for so many people these days.
Please don’t give Netflix credit/blame for people having to make difficult decisions on the daily.
      Love your blog!
